Gesso, wax, polymer, acrylic, oil stick, polyurethane, clear wax. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney’s first hit cartoon character, created in 1927 with long floppy ears, a cheeky attitude, and a rubbery animation style that captured audiences quickly. But after Disney lost the rights to Oswald in a studio dispute, he returned home determined to create a new character he could fully own. Using Oswald as inspiration, Disney and his animator Ub Iwerks shortened the ears, refined the design, and gave the character a new name: Mickey Mouse. With that simple transformation, Oswald quietly evolved into one of the most iconic figures in animation history. Here we see Todd Mossman’s brilliant interpretation of Lucky, frolicking through the tulips and looking ahead.
